NCWV Showcases Student Perspectives at Parliament

12 August 2024

On Friday, 9th August 2024, six of our Senior students were honoured to attend the distinguished event "My Vote, My Voice", organised by the National Council of Women of Victoria (NCWV). Held in the historic Legislative Council Chamber of the Parliament of Victoria, this event marked a significant milestone for our students.

The NCWV, a non-party, non-sectarian, not-for-profit organisation, is dedicated to advancing humanitarian and educational objectives. The event was graciously welcomed by Elida Brereton, President of NCWV. Meena Singh, Co-Commissioner for Children and Young People (CCYP) provided valuable insights as the guest speaker, while Vice-President Pam Hammond, Convenor of the 鈥楥ivics and Citizenship鈥 programme at NCWV, introduced our student participants.

Our students who attended the NCWV event were:

  • Mohammad Awwady, Year 12
  • Mariam Siddiqui, Year 12
  • Areeba Bilal, Year 12
  • Abdullah Mustafa, Year 12
  • Alvia Khan, Year 11
  • Farhan Abid, Year 11.

Our College Captain, Mohammad Awwady, and College Vice Captain, Mariam Siddiqui, both in Year 12, delivered compelling speeches on this year鈥檚 theme: 鈥淪ocial Media 鈥 A Blessing or a Curse.鈥 Their well-researched speeches reflected diverse perspectives and were presented with excellent clarity and impact.

The event also featured participation from 12 other Victorian schools, and our students' contributions were delivered to a high standard. "My Vote My Voice 2024" received support from the President of the Legislative Council, the Education and Community Engagement Unit at Parliament of Victoria, the Australian Local Government Women鈥檚 Association (Victoria), the League of Women Voters, Victoria, and the Bessie M. Rischbieth Trust grant.

The event concluded with photos and light refreshments. We are immensely proud of our senior students for representing our school on such an important platform alongside other distinguished school. We also extend our gratitude to the National Council of Women Victoria for hosting this impactful annual event.
